Experience
My previous role was I.T. Manager with Research and Evaluation
Services (RES) an independent social research company based in Belfast,
Northern Ireland. I joined RES in January 1995 managing the implementation
of the quantitative research side of the business. My main role
was in overseeing the large fieldwork projects from project initiation
meetings with the client through to data hand over. I was also involved
in implementing postal surveys, employee satisfaction surveys and
data punching projects.
In 1996 I played a central role in RES’ move to Computer Assisted
Personal Interviewing (CAPI) software - SurveyCraft (http://www.spss.com/surveycraft).
This involved an intensive week-long training session with the software
agency in Dublin. I was then involved in the purchase and set up
of the laptop computers and the training and support of the interviewers.
Over the years my expertise in taking paper based questionnaires and
converting them to computer programs for use by fieldwork interviewers
has given me a wealth of experience that our clients were able to take
advantage of. In 2000 RES set up its Telephone Research Centre, which
uses the Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) side of the SurveyCraft
software. I was involved in the set up of the hardware and software
of this 24-person centre.
In 2004 RES took the decision to change its CAPI and CATI software
from SurveyCraft to NIPO (http://www.niposoftware.com).
I was involved mainly on the CAPI side of the operation, writing
manuals and designing training courses for the fieldwork interviewers.
RES employed 3 NIPO programmers to service both the CAPI and CATI sides
of the business and I would have played an overseer role to the programmers
to ensure the programmed script matched that of the paper based questionnaire.
